Medical Education Section

Outline
Recently in Japan, the circumstances surrounding medical treatment have been rapidly changing due to the aging population and the appearance of new and more complex diseases and medical technologies dealing with them. Medical treatment facilities are being restructured to respond to these changes and to provide appropriate medical services. Accordingly, medical professionals are required to have specialized skills. Since its establishment, the Jikei Group has been training students to be leading pioneers in medical treatment. We have three educational philosophies:
(1) acquiring medical knowledge with a high level of technique and practicality
(2) respecting ethics in medicine and services to patients
(3) fostering international cooperation and sharing of medical technologies.
We aim for "a practical education in techniques" and モindependent-mindedness" under the direction of trusted teachers and staff. Ten colleges belonging to the section train skilled specialists in various fields such as medical technology, dental technology, hospital management, medical secretaryship and pharmaceutical business.

■Special Education Activities
「LTMA」Program
We train medical specialists to follow our four steps.
(1) LEARN(acquiring a good educational foundation; observation period)
(2)THINK(acquiring the basics in the field of specialization and improving the ability to apply them; knowledge acquisition period)
(3)MOVE(do field research and job searching; technique acquisition period)
(4)ARRANGE AND MEASURE(writing a graduation thesis and preparing for national examinations; organization and evaluation period )

Preparation for Qualification Examinations
In the national qualification preparation programs, all of the students aim to obtain national qualifications. The annual pass rate is 85-100%, or 100% for seven years in a row in certain departments, is in the top class on a national basis. Our special courses also help prepare students for non-governmental qualifications, whose tests most of them succeed in passing.

Shoe-fitter Training
We invite an orthopedic "shoe master" from Germany to provide students with practical training in actual shoemaking. In the first year, students learn to make regular shoes. In the second year, they learn the techniques to make special shoes for people who cannot wear commercially available ones because of serious foot deformations.

Prosthetic training
Prosthetists are invited as main instructors to give students practical training in making artificial limbs. Students use the same techniques, materials and tools as those used at the actual workplace. Patients who have actually lost their limbs make thorough evaluations of the artificial ones made by students.

Dental Technology Training
Ours is the first dental mechanic training school in Japan with a three-year program. We provide students with one-to-one instruction, so that they can learn not only the techniques but also the way of solving problems through research, social education, information technology and study of public hygiene.

Overseas Training Program
As part of our policy of international education, we have an overseas training program, in which students experience academic exchanges through workshops with students from foreign countries. We also have training programs at hospitals and company facilities. Mutual and better understanding among students are fostered through cultural exchanges and sports events.

Volunteer Activities
The first and second year students in Jikei schools work as volunteers in the Children's Language Institute of Jikei Gakuen. Volunteer activities help students to develop a service mentality.

Participation in Clinical Engineering Symposium
At the 13th and 14th Autumn Conference of Japan Medical Education, two of our students read papers on their research: "A Trial Manufacture and Performance Evaluation of a Blood Leakage Detector" and "Making Medical Education Equipment Management Software Using Commercially Available Database and its Evaluation". Both of them were well received.

Qualification as R.C.I.S.(Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist)
One of our graduates was the first Japanese to qualify as an R.C.I.S. He entered Spokane Community College after working at a hospital for three years and studying in a non-degree graduate course. He is now working as an assistant in the Circulatory Organ Department of Oregon Health Science University.
