Student Counseling Education Section

Outline
The term メcounselingモ is used in a broad sense of the meaning here, because services such as consultation on withdrawal from school and educational instructions for professionals, also require elements of counseling. This is partly because most consultations from students are related to a loss of sense of purpose. If students have a definite purpose, they will not usually consider withdrawing from school due to economic reasons alone. This education section focuses on divisions supporting students beyond the scope of instructors and homeroom teachers, such as the Student Counseling Center (EAST) and SSC (COM) which aim to provide psychological support to students. In addition, since the approaches differ between schools, it is hoped that this section will become a place where representatives of different schools can exchange information, bring their findings back to each school, and make proposals at decision-making meetings. By メpaving the wayモ in such a manner, the section strives to comprehensively support the various counseling rooms at various schools.

Current Status of Section Participants
Jikei EAST
As a place for consultation with students, a counseling room has been established at each school. Full-time and part-time counselors provide counseling there. (Full-time counselors are available at Tokyo College of Medico-Pharmaco Technology, Tokyo College of Welfare and Saitama College of Welfare.) Starting this year, UPI (screening test conducted on health consultation cards) was carried out to identify the physical and mental health condition of students at an early stage. This makes counseling based on early identification feasible. Furthermore, to continue reference to psychiatrists from next year onwards, the section will be increasing the number of psychiatrists prepared to work together with the schools. As one goal for 2003, the section hopes to standardize the record and case forms.

Jikei WEST
Basically, there are no independent counseling rooms. Homeroom teachers mainly handle the counseling, and experienced teachers handle difficult cases. A common counseling room will be established for Osaka College of High Technology, Osaka College of Health and Welfare, and Osaka College of Medical and Welfare (all located near Shin-Osaka station) starting in 2003.

Jikei COM
A comprehensive student counseling contact window called "SSC" has been established at all COM Group schools. Since 2002, the following programs have been started at Tokyo COM: Follow-up program (1) Counseling activities (conventional) Career enhancement program (2) Supporting activities: career design seminars, cooperation with employment center Growing-up program (3) Prevention and development: Psychological education Enrichment system (4) related activities: Database management, promotion (VTR) Program contents will be coordinated, and the system will be expanded to other areas.

Topics from the Education Section
Homeroom teacher support system
Cases related to students will be put into data form to create a joint databank system for schools in the Tokyo area (Tokyo EAST and Tokyo COM), and a system enabling data search to be started. This system will be implemented so that homeroom teachers can independently handle and consider an individual studentsユ case.

Liaison meeting for student counseling rooms, SSC, Keiseikai Clinic and dormitories
A meeting will be held twice a year so that representatives of dormitories, supporting both the school and students, and Keiseikai Clinic can gather together and exchange information for a shared understanding of the present status. The meeting will actively discuss measures to improve the current system, such as in risk management.
